What is Tianzige paper?
Tianzige (田字格) divides a square with one vertical and one horizontal center line. The four resulting sections resemble the shape of 田. Those two lines give you a direct way to check whether a character sits too high, too low, too far left, or too far right.
The uncluttered layout is useful when you already understand the direction of the strokes and want to concentrate on the finished character’s overall proportions.
What is Mizige paper?
Mizige (米字格) keeps the same horizontal and vertical center lines and adds diagonal guides. Together, the lines resemble 米. The diagonals add reference points for strokes that rise, fall, sweep, or mirror one another across the square.
More guides do not automatically make a worksheet better. They are useful only when you actively compare a stroke or component with them.

How to decide for a specific character
- Watch the stroke order first. Open the character in the dictionary and notice its main directions.
- Identify the problem you are correcting. If the whole character leans or sits off-center, Tianzige may be enough. If a diagonal stroke repeatedly begins or ends in the wrong area, try Mizige.
- Use one grid for a short set. Write several deliberate attempts before switching. Changing the page after every character makes comparison harder.
- Remove guides as confidence grows. The goal is to understand the shape, not to depend permanently on every line.
Set up a useful printable worksheet
Start with five to eight related characters. Include one or two tracing models, followed by empty cells for writing from memory.
